Why are the nations so angry?

The other day, I had an interesting discussion with a family member about the current wars and rumors of wars. We ended up talking about the big why.

Why fight each other? What is behind all of this?

Just as so many other people, we were trying to make sense of it all. Not an easy task, I might add.

News outlets

Some say all wars are caused by religion or nationalism. Others say it is all about territory and power. Some think it is all about economic gain, while others are sure it is about securing borders and self-defence.

Now, there is probably some truth in all of the above, which can cause quite some confusion as news outlets are busy pushing their take on things to their viewers and readers, 24/7.

Why fight each other? An age-old question. Psalm 2:1 says: Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans?

The anointed One

Yeah, why waste time on wars while we could be planting flowers, raising families, and baking bread?

Personally, I find it very interesting that the answer to that very question is in the next verse: The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one.

Aha, so there is a huge, global plot against the Lord and against the Messiah (the anointed one)?! Ultimately, nations are not fighting for God, but against Him and His rule on earth. Their reasoning is described in verse 3: “Let us break their chains,” they cry, “and free ourselves from slavery to God.”

Atheism provides no answer

To this day, many people think atheism is the answer, but in their ongoing quest to be free, they have become slaves of war, power, wealth, influence, and self. God never wanted slaves; He wants sons and daughters who will do their best to live in peace and take care of this earth and each other until the Messiah comes back.

“The nations are in chaos, and their kingdoms crumble! God’s voice thunders, and the earth melts! The Lord of Heaven’s Armies is here among us; the God of Israel is our fortress."

(Psalm 46:6-7)

  1. Seeking freedom for ourselves always results in slavery to sin. Rebelling against our Lord is what got Adam and Eve in trouble, isn't it? Such a thoughtful reflection here, Marja. Blessings!
