My #oneword for 2026

Can a single word encourage, inspire, or sustain us?

A word that will stick with us throughout the year? A word that will influence our writing or inspire our prayer life?

Hmm, that's worth a thought. I like the idea of having a word for the year, and I received many throughout the years of my writing and blogging career.

Facebook writer's group

At the beginning of this year, however, no specific word had been pointed out to me, and I decided to let it go. Halfway through January, I saw a post in a Facebook writer's group. It was a prompting: 'Share a scripture or word that God has given you to guide your writing this year.'

I replied that nothing had come to mind, but that I would pray about it one more time. The next morning, during my prayer time, I was reminded (and I believe this is how the Holy Spirit works) of a scripture I had jotted down in my 'writing stuff' journal at the beginning of the year:

The Lord, the Mighty One, is God, and he has spoken; he has summoned all humanity from where the sun rises to where it sets. From Mount Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines in glorious radiance (Psalm 50:12).

Hand-lettered word

I had hand-lettered the word 'Radiance' on that page and beautified it with vellum flower stickers. No word for the year? Who said so? It was there, right in front of me: radiance!

This word will remind me, throughout the year, of God's greatness and beauty. It will remind me that Jesus is the radiance of God's glory. And yes, it will remind me to be radiant with joy because I have put my hope in Him.

Do you have a word for the year?

“Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you. Darkness as black as night covers all the nations of the earth, but the glory of the Lord rises and appears over you. All nations will come to your light; mighty kings will come to see your radiance.

(Isaiah 60:1-3)
