Oh, the things we do to live a long and happy life.... (Be honest, fill that in for yourself.)
Don't get me wrong, God is certainly not against a long life filled with riches and honor; it is His idea. But the way to get there is... well, how can I put it... rather different from the ways the world wants us to walk.
👉True humility and fear (reverence) of God will lead us on that blessed path! That 'fear-of-the-Lord' thing, we get it (I hope). But 'true humility'? How would we define that? Let's be honest, saying that we are humble basically means we are not.
Giving up privileges
I believe Jesus was truly humble. He gave up his divine privileges. He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being (Philippians 2:7). Giving up your privileges. Ouch.
Jesus also humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross (Philippians 2:8). Being falsely accused and not even defending yourself. Ouch.
Bye bye selfies
So, true humility is surrendering our pride (no longer being occupied with self) and becoming totally dependent on God. Easier said than done. Just a few reminders:
- Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honor (Proverbs 29:23)
- For the Lord delights in his people; he crowns the humble with victory (Psalm 149:4)
- God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth (Matthew 5:5)
