We asked everyone to write down their first thought upon waking up for a whole week. Sounds simple... but turned out to be rather difficult.
Most of us would wake up, lie quietly for a few moments, and then suddenly remember the exercise and wonder: 'What was my very first thought when I opened my eyes?'
Gather your thoughts
Somehow, it takes a few minutes (seconds maybe) to actually wake up and gather our thoughts. Well, that was the case for the majority of our group. Have you ever taken notice of the very first thought when waking up?
It could be anything. A thought of worry, thankfulness, pain, a dream, the day ahead, work, fun things to do, or a prayer... as David did: Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly (Psalm 5:3).
Thoughts from God
Each morning, he had a hunger and also a need to hear from God. He waited, he listened. David grew in hearing from God, in tuning in to the voice of the Lord. He wrote in Psalm 143:8, Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you.
Let me hear... I love that. Wake us up each morning Lord, and open our ears as well as our minds for the thoughts YOU want to install in us.

The Sovereign Lord has given me his words of wisdom, so that I know how to comfort the weary. Morning by morning he wakens me and opens my understanding to his will.
[Isaiah 50:4]
