Why focus on our imperfections?

The other day, I was wondering whether we influence culture or whether culture influences us.

Maybe that is a strange thought, kind of like the one that asks who was first: the chicken or the egg.

But seriously, are we followers or leaders? Do we copy or create?

We live in a society where there is an increasing focus on 'self' and 'me', which often results in a focus on our failures and imperfections. Others always look better. Insecurity is on the rise.

Where is our focus?

Who started it? Does it come from within, or is there an external force at work?

Well, as believers, we should know the answer. Focus on ourselves increases trouble; focus on God increases His goodness and power. During my morning devotion, I read Psalm 27. Verse 4 says in my NLT Bible:

The one thing I ask of the Lord—the thing I seek most—is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditating in his Temple.

Delighting in His perfections

To live in the house of the Lord means to live where His presence dwells (we are His temple now). But that is not what caught my attention. It was this particular part of that well-known verse: delighting in the Lord’s perfections.

Instead of focusing on our own imperfections, we are called to delight in His perfections. To meditate on the eternal attributes and character of God!

Almighty God

He is mighty. He is all-knowing, all-present, and all-powerful. He is light, and love, and peace. He is our refuge, a tower of strength. The more we delight in Him, the more our hearts will be at peace.
