Why reading memoirs and (auto)biographies is significant

Do you ever read memoirs or (auto)biographies? No, I am not talking about the ones written by celebrities and businesspeople.

I am referring to books written by revival preachers and missionaries, individuals who gave up everything to follow their God-given calling.

Their adventures are stories of compelling courage and self-sacrifice. Most of all, their stories are testimonies about a God who calls people to do the works He has prepared in advance. While reading, you might even discover His plan for your life.

Women of faith and courage

I recently finished a book by Kathryn Kuhlman. She was a charismatic Christian evangelist whose healing ministry took off in the late 1940s and ’50s. She had a very precious sensitivity to the Holy Spirit. I love her books!

I also just finished reading the story of Lily Gaynor. In 1957 Lily, a freshly qualified nurse and WEC missionary, set sail for Guinea-Bissau, to live among the Papel tribe. Tuberculosis, malaria, and typhoid were rife. Children were grossly malnourished; witch doctors flourished.

Lily set up a clinic under the mango trees, administering penicillin ('God's needle'). In the afternoons she learned Papel. In the evenings she invented an alphabet, and finally translated the entire New Testament, now published with Wycliffe Bible Translators.

Missionary to China

In my YouVersion Bible app, I am currently going through a reading plan based on the writings of Hudson TaylorHe was a British Protestant Christian missionary to China (he first sailed to China in 1853!) and founder of the China Inland Mission. Taylor spent 54 years in China. My goodness, we can learn a thing or two from his life!

Maybe you have never heard their names, but I can guarantee you that their stories are remarkable and very inspiring. Why not take some time this summer to read such stories? You will certainly be encouraged and, who knows, you will discover your specific calling

If you can recommend books that made an impact on your life, feel free to share.

After the usual readings from the books of Moses and the prophets, those in charge of the service sent them this message: “Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, come and give it.”

(Acts 13:15)

  3. Marja: I enjoyed reading the biographies of Amy Carmichael (A Chance to Die, by Elisabeth Elliot) and the autobiography of George Mueller. Both of these missionaries had very strong faith. Be Blessed.
