This disagreement among believers

One of the most tragic and disgraceful things within the Christian world is believers fighting over theology, dogmas, or scripture interpretation.

Especially if it ends in parties going opposite directions, as we have seen in church and denominational splits.

Of course, we are entitled to a difference in opinion. But surely we can maintain unity despite diversity, right? This is, after all, what Jesus prayed for (John 17:20-21).

A healthy balance

In my opinion, we often end up doing exactly the same things people in the world are doing: polarizing over points of view and conclusions, going from one extreme to the other, and, in the end, loving only ourselves while despising others. It should not be so.

Although I sometimes get the eerie feeling that Christians disagree about a million topics while agreeing on just a few, I have discovered we can find and keep a healthy balance in our Christian beliefs.

Core values of Christianity

It is impossible to agree on everything, but we can and should agree on the core values of Christianity; principles and ethics that are crucial for the times we live in. In my book series about the Ten Commandments in the 21st century, I take the reader on a treasure hunt throughout the Old and New Testaments, only to discover that within the ancient Ten Commandments lie hidden ten core values we can all agree upon and live by.

Now, that would bring us a step closer to the unity Jesus longed to see among us, right?

Legalism or hyper-grace?

Do you find it hard to keep the balance in your Christian views? Have you argued over different points of view? Have you discovered that legalism is not the answer, and neither is hyper-grace? Why not go on that treasure hunt?

I also tell you this: If two of you agree here on earth concerning anything you ask, my Father in heaven will do it for you.

[Matthew 18:19]

  1. We all see the world differently, but as Christians, we should not let our differences divide us. May we live in the kind of harmony that Jesus modeled for us. Blessings!

    1. This is so true Cecelia, unfortunately many people do this as a last resort, not as a first.
