Of course, in a sense, we all mark out our own path. We make choices every day that are in line with the path we are on. If we have an athletic goal, we should be on the path of discipline and exercise. If we have an academic goal, we should be on the path of studying and learning. If we have a marriage goal, we should be on the path towards a serious relationship.
No path, no destiny
There is nothing wrong with marking out the path we want to follow. Think about it: No path, no destiny. Just aimless wandering. There are warnings, though. The Bible says in Proverbs 14:12, There is a path before each person that seems right, but it ends in death. Ouch! Not all paths lead to blessings.
The path of life
We need God's wisdom and direction if we want to follow the path that leads to life. Back in the day, David understood that quite well. He wrote: You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand (Psalm 16:11).
I love the idea that the Lord will make known to us the path of life. As a matter of fact, He already did, for Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. But even in our life with Jesus, there are roads to travel, paths to follow, and crossings to take.
Have you wandered off track?
We can simply ask Him in our prayers whether we are still on that path of life or if we have (somehow or somewhere) gotten distracted and wandered off track. We have this awesome promise that He will always keep His eyes on our steps. Psalms 1:6, For the Lord watches over the path of the godly, but the path of the wicked leads to destruction.
In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
[Proverbs 3:6]
