Increase our faith!

I have always been intrigued by the fact that the disciples (yeah, those men who walked with Jesus every day for three whole years!) asked Jesus to increase their faith.

A logical request perhaps, if you've never seen Jesus face to face and have to live off of the stories, like we do today. But the disciples? Come on, they saw all the miracles first-hand. They were there when He healed the sick, calmed the storm, and raised the dead.

Jesus didn't think it necessary to give them more faith. He explained that if they had faith as big as a mustard seed they could perform miracles. In essence, He was saying, whatever faith you have, use it!

This is such an important principle throughout the entire Bible. Use the faith you have, plant it as a seed and it will grow. Not by asking Jesus for more, but by using it!

Why is faith so important?
  • First of all, because we cannot please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6)
  • Second, because we are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:26)
  • Third, because the shield of faith will stop the fiery arrows of the devil (Ephesians 6:16)
And last, but certainly not least, we need faith to overcome the troubles of this world. It is so easy to become overwhelmed by fearful thoughts of terror and disasters, sickness, discouragement, failed relationships, financial stress, and difficult work situations. This is where we must activate our faith and declare God's Word over our circumstances!

We win the victory over the world by means of our faith
[1 John 5:4]

  1. Thanks Cecelia, you used the right word! They needed to exercise the faith they had, and so should we!

  2. I agree! It's much more simple than we've made it to be. Appreciate this, Marja, as I've been wrestling with some stress from recent family obligations and whatnot. Thank you for reminding me and refreshing my perspective. :)
